I stopped buying patterned/themed gift wrap bags a couple of years ago and make my own now instead. I love having a big stack of white and kraft paper gift bags in my gift wrap supplies that I can dress up last minute for a gift or make coordinate with some themed gift wrap. Here is a tutorial for a DIY Valentine’s Day Gift Wrap Bag to show you just how easy it is.
My DIY Valentine’s Day Gift Wrap Bag costs less than $3 to make and you can use whatever design or color you would like!
Estimated Time: 10 Minutes
Skill Level: Beginner
Supplies Needed:
- Silhouette CAMEO® 4
- Silhouette Cutting Mat
- Weeding Hook
- Silhouette Studio
- Adhesive Vinyl – Pink
- Transfer Tape
- Kraft Paper Gift Bag
- Love Script by Michaels
Step One: Create Your Valentine’s Day Gift Wrap Decal:
Open Silhouette Studio®.
Select the Page Setup Window and adjust your cutting mat size to 12×12 (or the size mat you are using).
Measure your gift bag.
Purchase the Love Script by Michaels design from the Silhouette Design Store and open it in the Silhouette Software. Click File>Library>Library> Fonts from the menu>Double click your file.
Re-size the design to fit your gift bag.
Step Two: Cutting Out Your Gift Wrap Decal:
Turn on your Silhouette Cameo 4.
Attach your Adhesive Vinyl to the cutting mat, color side up, and load into your machine by lining up the mat on the guidelines and pressing the “up” arrow on the touch panel.
Follow the prompts in the Design Studio for Adhesive Vinyl and double-check to make sure your design has been selected to cut.
Click “Send” in the design studio to start cutting.
Finally, press the “down” arrow on the Cameo 4 touch panel when your machine has finished cutting your design to remove the cutting mat from the machine.
Step Three: Prepare Your Valentine’s Day Decal:
Start by removing your Adhesive Vinyl from the cutting mat – go slow so it doesn’t curl up.
Next, use a paper trimmer to cut away the vinyl you won’t be using so you don’t waste any vinyl.
Use your fingers or a weeding tool to remove the excess vinyl. Be sure to leave your design on the white backing sheet and get be sure to get the vinyl out of the loops and middles of your letters.
Step Four: Creating Your DIY Valentine’s Day Gift Wrap Bag:
Place a piece of transfer tape over your design.
Use the scraping tool and scrape the top of the transfer tape to make sure the design adheres to it.
Gently pull transfer tape up away from the backing sheet and make sure the entire design lifts with it.
Center your design on your gift bag and press it down from left to right. Don’t press down too hard or the transfer tape won’t want to let go of the gift bag. My friend Teresa has a great tutorial about using adhesive vinyl on wrapping paper.
Slowly remove the transfer tape from your gift bag. Tip: pull from a corner and not the side to make sure each part of the design transfers completely to your gift bag.
I love being able to create gift wrap at home that is exactly what I need for my gift-giving at a fraction of the cost of normal gift bags. Tell me if you are a bag or wrapping paper fan in the comments.
