Yikes, it is already the second quarter of the year and are you wondering how to catch up on your small business bookkeeping? I have been there too… have you just finished getting last year’s books in order and now you’re totally overwhelmed at the thought of having to catch up on your small business bookkeeping for THIS year?

That’s ok. Just because you may be behind on your bookkeeping today doesn’t disqualify you from being able to do it!

Full disclosure: I was VERY behind this month too. An abrupt cross-country move, a hurricane, a new house, and 1000 other things will do that to you. It’s called life and sometimes you may get a little behind in your bookkeeping. The important thing is catching up and then maintaining going forward.

How are you going to catch up? I’m going to give you a couple of action steps today to help you catch up on your small business bookkeeping and confidently move forward throughout the rest of the year.

Be sure to grab the ebook A Beginner’s Guide to Bookkeeping or schedule a one-on-one session if you need a little extra help to get started today.

A Beginner's Guide to Bookkeeping

Catch Up On Your Small Business Bookkeeping Step #1:

Create a folder/label in your email inbox

I want you to go into your e-mail inbox and create a sub-folder for all of your online purchases. Create a folder that says “2023” or whatever year it happens to be when you’re finding this post.

Drag and drop all of your receipts emails from this year into the folder.

Once they’re there, you can easily find all your expenses in one place when you’re ready to sit down and do your bookkeeping for the month.

Catch Up On Your Small Business Bookkeeping Step #2:

Get physical receipts in a drop zone after every purchase

The place you put them isn’t even as important. Just as long as they all go into the SAME place every time. No more forgotten receipts in shopping bags or in the bottom of your purse.

Just like digital receipts, the important thing is that they are all in one spot when you are able to sit down to complete your bookkeeping tasks.

Find a random fast food receipt mixed in the bunch? Just remove it.

You can get this free receipts SVG and make your own receipt box if you want to get crafty while doing your bookkeeping too.

If you are a person who doesn’t like paper clutter in your house, you can scan all the physical receipts into a OneDrive folder.

Some drop zone suggestions:

Basket on the counter or your desk

Receipt box

Receipt folder

Filing cabinet

Binder clip them in a kitchen drawer

Ziploc bag – I mean it, this is a great option!

Receipt box on desk. Create a receipt drop zone for your small business bookkeeping.

That’s how to catch up on your small business bookkeeping.

Just do baby steps, little consistent steps, and before you know it you’re all caught up and moving forward through the rest of the year.
